Mekong River Commission Holds Regional Stakeholder Forum on Pak Beng Hydropower Project
 

On 22-23 February, 2017, a regional stakeholder forum regarding the Pak Beng Hydropower Project, with the theme of “Sharing, Listening and Action”, was held in Luang Prabang, Laos by Mekong River Commission. It was the first official meeting for the PNPCA procedure for Pak Beng Hydropower Project and an integral part of PNPCA. Participants included relevant departments, experts/scholars, NGO and media of the four governments along the banks of the Lower Mekong River including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, cascade developers of hydropower stations on the mainstream of Mekong River and other overseas scientific institutions and environmental organization.

As required by the Lao government, POWERCHINA Kunming, which undertook survey and design of this project, attended the meeting together with Datang (Laos) Pak Beng Hydropower Co., Ltd. as its Technical Consultant. Dr. Dao Weng, Permanent Director of the General Office in Lao Ministry of Energy and Mineral, and Zhan Shaweng, Director of the Energy Policy and Planning Department reported the development progress and basic information of Pak Beng Hydropower Project, took the issues and advices from the participants and answered the concerns of the meeting with the technical support from Kunming Engineering Corporation Limited .

The meeting made arrangements for the next steps regarding PNPCA of Pak Beng Hydropower Project. Stockholm Environment Research Center was delegated to carry out cross-border accumulated environmental and social impacts, and a technical consultation will be organized in May, 2017.
