Zungeru Hydropower Station (Nigeria) Achieves Main Channel Closure

On December 15, 2016, the Zungeru Hydropower Station (Nigeria) designed by POWERCHINA Kunming achieved the main channel closure, and a grand ceremony was held at the project site. Ling Yun, project manager and deputy chief engineer in POWERCHINA Kunming, Qiu Haisheng, general manager assistant in Overseas Engineering Company of POWERCHINA Kunming and relevant personnel were invited to the ceremony.

Participants in the ceremony also included Dr. Adewumi, Project Leader of the Employer’s Representative; Ajayi, the Employer’s Project Manager and Director of the Federal Ministry of Power; Abdulmalik Dagaci Usman Cheche, Director of the Niger Labor & Transport Bureau; as well as foreign representatives including local traditional leaders. They all witnessed the main channel closure.

Zungeru Hydropower Station is a composite dam composed by RCC (roller-compacted concrete) gravity dam and core-wall rockfill dam (on both banks), with an installed capacity of 700MW (4×175MW) and a total storage of approximately 10,187MCM. Being classified into level-1 and large-scale (1) project, the Station is equipped with multiple functions, including power generation, flood prevention, irrigation, cultivation and shipping etc.

As the largest project under construction in Nigeria, Zungeru Hydropower Station has attracted high attention from both the Chinese and Nigerian government, and it is also the first hydropower station project of POWERCHINA Kunming upon its return to Africa. This successful closure, as an important milestone during the project implementation, marks a great progress in project promotion, which creates favorable conditions for the next stage of project construction.
